CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) — The estranged brother-in-law of singer and actress Jennifer Hudson was indicted Tuesday on three counts of murder, according to the Cook County, Illinois, prosecutor’s office.
The slayings of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew stunned Chicago and the nation.
William Balfour, 27, is accused of killing Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew.
Prosecutors have portrayed Balfour as a jealous man who murdered three people in rage at the thought that his ex-wife had a boyfriend.
Balfour is the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia Hudson, and the stepfather of one of the victims, 7-year-old Julian King.
Also killed were Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother Jason Hudson, 27.
He has also been charged with one count of home invasion.
He denies the charges, and his lawyer told the court earlier this month there is no forensic evidence linking him to the killings.
Hudson won a best supporting actress Oscar for her portrayal of Effie in the film version of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.”
She competed on the third season of singing competition “American Idol” in 2004, becoming one of the top seven contestants before being eliminated from the contest.
The Hudson family home is on the south side of Chicago, and the slayings sent shock waves through the community in October.
The recession has hit the housing market hard, including planned communities for retirees.
That is no less true when it comes to housing for GLBT seniors.
Across the country, planned communities for retiring gays and lesbians have been on the drawing board, but have had a hard time getting underway.
One such project, undertaken by RainbowVision California LLC, has suffered a setback with the land intended for a planned retirement community catering to the silver GLBT set reverting to a lender for the project.
The lender, Senior Housing Partners III, retook the land in a foreclosure auction, reported the Palm Springs newspaper The Desert Sun in a Dec. 17 article.
The planned community had enjoyed promotion by tennis star Billie Jean King, the article said, but the economic realities of the situation forced the project to stall.
The article quoted RainbowVision president Joy Silver, who said, “The only thing stopping us is the economy–the fact that banks have not been in a position to make construction loans.
“We plan to move forward as soon as the economy allows.”
RainbowVision has already laid claim to the nation’s first GLBT retirement community, which is up and running in Santa Fe, NM.
Other retirement communities for older gays and lesbians have followed suit, such as The Palms of Manasota in Florida, and Birds of a Feather in Pecos, NM.
But the delay in the construction of the Palm Springs community is also not unique: the development of Boston’s LGBT retirement project Stonewall Communities was put on hold earlier this year.
The new community in Palm Springs was designed to include nearly 200 units, along with community amenities such as a nightclub, pool, spa, club house, and café, as well as athletic facilities.
The company hopes that once the economy recovers, RainbowVision will be able to buy the land back once again and proceed with construction.
Meantime, some of the seniors interested in the Palm Springs community have decided to relocate to Santa Fe instead, to the already-operating GLBT retirement community there.
“The [GLBT retirement community] model works; we know it,” said Silver of the Santa Fe location.
“We’re seeing a rise in occupancy there.”

This may be the very best police report of 2008. When Charles Barkley was busted in Arizona early this morning for DUI, he told cops he ran a stop sign because he was in a hurry to get some oral sex.
According to the officer who wrote the report, “He told me that he ran the stop sign because he was in a hurry to pick up the girl I saw get in the passenger seat.”
The officer continues: “He asked me to admit that she was ‘hot.’ He asked me, ‘You want the truth?’ When I told him I did he said, ‘I was gonna drive around the corner and get a b**w job. He then explained that she had given him a ‘b**w job’ one week earlier and said it was the best one he had ever had in his life.”
The report says when Barkley was taken to the station, he told one of the employees, “I’ll tattoo my name on your ass” if he helped “get him out of the DUI.” According to the report, “He laughed and then quickly corrected himself and said, ‘I’ll tattoo your name on my ass’ and then laughed again.”
The report also says officers “found a handgun in the vehicle” which was immediately impounded. The report doesn’t say if the handgun was legal or not, and the only thing that we know for sure was loaded…
Alan Ball was acquitted of sexual assault after medical experts said he was sleepwalking
A lorry driver who climbed into bed with a young girl and kissed her on the lips has been cleared of sexual assault after experts said he was sleepwalking at the time.
Alan Ball, 35, had fallen asleep on a sofa after drinking heavily at a house party but during the night he got into bed with the girl who was sleeping upstairs.
He was charged with sexual assault but experts who examined his history of sleepwalking concluded he had not known what he was doing and he was cleared by a judge.
Mr Ball, who has a daughter aged five, said the year-long ordeal had destroyed his life and told of his relief at being absolved of blame.
‘I knew I was innocent but not a day went by when it went through my head, “What if I end up in jail for something I have not done?”‘ he said.
‘Even when I went round to friends’ houses where there were young kids, you wonder whether it goes through their minds.’
Mr Ball was arrested following the house party last New Year’s Eve after he was accused of getting into bed with the girl, who was under 13, and kissing her on the lips.
He insisted he had no memory of what had happened, but he was charged with sexual assault.
But Preston Crown Court was told his history of sleepwalking meant the allegation was being dropped.
Fiorella Brereton, prosecuting, said that because of the seriousness of the alleged offence, two experts had been commissioned to examine him.
‘Both experts were of the opinion the defendant would not have known what he was doing,’ she said. ‘He has a history of sleepwalking typical of that type of behaviour of not knowing what he was doing. Sleepwalking is also within the family.
Mr Ball was cleared at Preston Crown Court
‘The experts consider because he did not carry out more activity when he got into bed with her, it is more concurrent with sleepwalking, and the evidence leads both experts to the opinion he had no intention of abuse.’
The Crown Prosecution Service and the girl’s family did not offer evidence against Mr Ball, and Judge Stuart Baker delivered a not guilty verdict.
Afterwards Mr Ball, of Ormskirk, Lancashire, said the past year had been ‘hell’. He said he had lost his job, become a social outcast and had been allowed to see his own daughter only during supervised visits.
‘Sometimes I had to ignore her phone calls,’ he said. ‘Not being able to have my child – that was like a 12-month sentence, and it is over now.’
Several defendants have been acquitted of offences including rape and even murder on the basis that they were sleepwalking. The defence is known as automatism, with those who commit indecent acts said to be suffering from ’sexsomnia’.
Last year Jane McKenna, 33, from Hampshire, claimed she had been raped by a friend’s husband, Jason Jeal, only for him to be cleared on the basis that he was sleepwalking - even though he had no medical history of the condition.
After the case, the Solicitor General said such arguments should be allowed in court only when backed up by well-founded medical evidence.

At least 59 people were killed and more than 180 were injured in a fire that broke out early Thursday in a Bangkok nightclub.
Witnesses said some 800 people were packed into the Santika club when they heard a loud explosion.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Police suggested it could have been caused by an electrical fault.
“We were all dancing and suddenly there was a big flame that came out of the front of the stage and everybody was running away,” one woman told Reuters.
Most of those who died in the building died from smoke inhalation or were trampled in a rush to get out of the club, police said.
According to authorities, most of the fatality victims were Thai, but foreigners have been identified from Australia, the Netherlands, Nepal and Japan.
Dozens of bodies lay on the pavement outside the club waiting to be taken away in pick-up trucks.
Bangkok is renowned for its nightlife, but many clubs are loosely regulated and often have poor fire safety systems. The Thai capital was hit two years ago on New Year’s Eve by a series of small explosions in which several people were killed and dozens injured.

The 95th Rose Bowl Game will be played at Pasadena, California on January 1 2009 between BCS #5 ranked USC and BCS #8 ranked Penn State. The Rose Bowl Game will be preceded by the 2009 Rose Parade. The theme for this year’s Rose Parade is “Hats Off To Entertainment”. The Rose Parade start time will be at 8 AM PT (11 AM ET). The Rose Bowl Time Schedule says the USC – Penn State game will start at 2 PM PT (5 PM ET).

The Rose Parade will be a 2.5 hours event. According to the TournamentofRoses.com website, – “The five-and-a-half mile Rose Parade route begins at the corner of Ellis Street and Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena. The Parade travels north on Orange Grove at a leisurely 2.5-mile per hour pace and then turns east onto Colorado Boulevard where the majority of the Parade takes place. At the end of the route, the Parade turns north onto Sierra Madre Boulevard and ends at Sierra Madre and Villa Street.”

Randy Keith Graybeal, who is accused of shooting his wife and then himself, was taken into custody Tuesday, Dec. 30 by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.
Graybeal is charged with first degree murder and is being held without bond pending an appearance in criminal court.
The incident occurred on Oct. 29 at 540 Timber Ridge Road near Bluff City, Tenn. Official reports state that the sheriff’s department found Graybeal’s wife, Angela Graybeal, dead from a gunshot wound. Graybeal was suffering from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
After an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division, evidence was presented to the Sullivan County Grand Jury, which led to a criminal court warrant charging Graybeal with first degree murder.
