Kieron Gaffney impressed the judges of Britain’s Got Talent with his skills with the sticks, despite only playing for a year.

“When I play I just shut my eyes and just feel the music inside, it’s a really good experience,” the 12-year-old drummer from Kent said. “I’d love to be the best drummer in the world when I’m older”

Piers commented: “If you only started to learn that a year ago and you are that level already you are going to be a super star drummer.” Simon also admired the performance saying, “normally I hate this kind of act, the idea of someone your age playing the drums is one of my biggest nightmares but that was totally and utterly brilliant”.

Here’s the video of Kieron’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent (May 23).

Fred Bowers, a 73-year-old breakdancer from Loughborough, shocked the judges of Britain’s Got Talent with his robotic dance moves.

After the performance, he received a standing ovation with Simon Cowell declaring: “This is why I love doing this show, because of people like you Fred, you were brilliant.”

Bowers revealed that he goes to local nightclubs seven nights a week. He is now so famous in Loughborough he doesn’t have to pay to get in.

“I started breakdancing eight years ago after getting angry. I threw myself on the floor in a rage, and then span on my back,” he said.

LeBron James nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 96-95 victory over the visiting Orlando Magic and level the NBA Eastern Conference finals at a game each.

From 23 feet, the 24-year-old basketball superstar made a shot unlike any before in Cleveland history.

“That’s a great shot man,” LeBron said. “We couldn’t afford to go down 0-2 to Orlando. That’s a great shot.”

The Up Film Director – Up, Up, and Away!

Friday 22 May 2009 @ 9:45 pm

animated_aquaworld

If you have kids or love to watch the occasional animated flick, like me, then you’ve probably seen the previews for the new Disney-Pixar filmUp“;  this is Pixar’s tenth film, and somewhere around the millionth for Disney.

The film is about the eccentric old Carl Fredricksen, who at 78, decides he wants to fly to South America. But not in any conventional way! He ties thousands and thousands of balloons to his house, and fully intends to fly all the way there. The film follows his adventures along the way, including the strange animals, and characters he meets on his journey.

In lieu of all the excitement for the film’s huge premier event, coming on May 29th, the film director Pete Docter takes the ride of his life. On May 8th, Pixar hosted the event in which the director was hoisted up into the air, with sixty-four huge, helium filled balloons holding him up. Safety first, of course, the director was flying by balloon, in an armchair. One by one, a team led by Troy Bradley filled, strapped, and evenly arranged these balloons so that they could safely lift the director in the chair. Cables were strapped to the balloons to keep the director from floating away in the meantime!

While this technology may not be new by any stretch of the imagination, the event and the film took plenty of it, –imagination, that is!

So… Vista or Windows 7?

Friday 22 May 2009 @ 9:43 pm

windows-7-logo1It seems like it was just the other day we were all sitting around with our friends, complaining about how long it was going to take to get our laptops downgraded to Windows XP because of how utterly horrible Windows Vista turned out to be.

Here’s an operating system that takes up a startling amount of memory, while only offering an aesthetically pleasing interface that has too many security holes, and a thousand other problems that have basically tanked Vista, and therefore made Mac and Linux rise in popularity.

So while some of us are thanking our lucky stars that we still have, and love our old standard XP machines, the curious are coming out of the woodwork to see what’s in store from Windows 7.

The most noteworthy feature so far in Windows 7 is the new Windows Media Player, which has finally changed into something we can look forward to again. According to Seth Rosenblatt of CNET news:

“Certainly, one of the biggest new features makes Windows Media Player useful again: you can now stream media files from one Windows 7 computer to another, across the Internet and out of network. Even better, the set up procedure is dead simple.”

Excellent news for people who love music, and love to share music, –count us in! One feature that has the critics feeling pretty neutral is the virtual “XP mode” that Windows 7 will have available, mostly to business owners and professionals, who need to view documents or programs that aren’t upgraded to run in Windows 7 or Vista. Other changes such as more accurate search results, and a lack of in-system bluetooth support.

Facebook’s New Features – Pointless or Convenient?

Friday 22 May 2009 @ 8:45 pm

facebook

The social network Facebook is off to a great start;  it stole MySpace’s spotlight and continued to rise in fame in what has been just a couple years.

Now it’s added on a new feature which may act as either a new popularity gaining asset, or on the contrary. The new feature is basically an option to allow Facebook to auto-refresh. Some social networking sites already have similar features. Carolyn McCarthy from CNET says:

“This is the same kind of “reload alert” that you’ll see on a Twitter Search query or on other interfaces like the Tumblr Dashboard–but, thus far, not on Twitter.com itself, the interface that most people point at as the chief inspiration for Facebook’s new homepage design. That’s probably not a huge priority for Facebook, though. Most avid users access Twitter with a third-party app, something that you’ll be able to do more widely with Facebook very soon.”

So maybe Facebook got kind of an inside track on some of Twitter’s new homepage plans; either way the new features are aesthetically pleasing, if not a great deal functional. The new ever flowing process of updating is part of Facebook’s design for a more “streaming” oriented system of receiving news and updates. So far, the user response has been fairly neutral.

‘Terminator Salvation’ makes $13.4M on Thursday opening

Friday 22 May 2009 @ 8:42 pm

terminator-salvation-box-office

Terminator Salvation, the fourth movie in the Terminator series, grossed an estimated $13.4 million at the North America box office on Thursday, with $3 million in midnight sales alone.

In other words, the movie did alright. It’s not the record breaker Warner Bros. was hoping for but with figures like that, it’s very likely that the new Christian Bale flick will take the number one spot at the box office.

Starting today, Terminator Salvation will be fighting for box-office victory against Fox’s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Paramount’s Dance Flick.
